The Health Effects of Being Overweight or Obese
Research has shown that as a person becomes "overweight" or "obese,"* the risks for the following conditions increase:
- Coronary heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cancers ( breast and colon)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
- Stroke
- Liver and Gallbladder disease
- Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
- Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
- Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)
According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), Overweight is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher; Obese is defined as having a BMI of 30 or higher. Your success depends on your honesty, responsibility, and cooperation throughout your program.
U.S. Obesity Trends from 1985 to 2007
During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States.
In 2007, only one state (Colorado) had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Thirty states had a prevalence equal to or greater than 25%; three of these states (Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee) had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%.
