While serving overseas in the military and competing in powerlifting events
throughout Europe, I chose to maintain a certain body weight for competition
purposes. Incorporating correct eating habits into my training program was
no easy accomplishment. I explored
diets, sampled recommended weight-loss supplements, read books
and listened to “experts.” What I learned the hard way was that the word
diet became extreme punishment. It almost drove me crazy--diet here,
diet there, low fat this, no-fat that, the most improved diet scheme of the
month. I could go on all day, but I will spare you the harrowing details.
Diets, in
my view, are basically timeframes of starvation. You begin by selecting a
start and finish date, e.g. Monday through Friday, first mistake.
Friday rolls around, and what do you do? Well, here is what I did, and I
will bet most of you will do or have done--revert back to the same old
eating habits and overstuff yourself with foods you’ve been deprived of,
second mistake.
Hence, my
goal is to instill in you this: if you want to lose weight, look better in
your clothes you must incorporate the phrase “correct eating habits
” into your life. Correct eating habits will bring about a whole new level
of well-being into your life that will help change you forever. The secret
is “eat.” . Eat three meals, two snacks and 80 to 100
oz. of water per day for the rest of your life. Now, who can argue with that?
Eating to lose is a tremendously difficult concept for individuals to
comprehend, but it absolutely works.
However, you must, follow
three simple rules: (1) portion size control (2) meals should consist of one
protein, one carbohydrate and one vegetable and (3) snacks should be high
quality foods, such as fruits, lean meat or raw vegetables. Incorporating
this type of change must come from within you. You must truly want to
change, or you will lose motivation and fail.
I’ve
received a great deal of support throughout my life concerning nutrition and
eating habits. Therefore, I try to return support to others in their quest
as well. Eliminating the word “diet” (which I define as unnecessary
punishment) from your vocabulary is the first step and the battle is
virtually won.
Remember, a healthy person is a happy person, and a happy person is more
productive.
